Think you've hit the nail on the head. Checked today and there's fluid on 
the gearbox under the slave cylinder. Not enough to have caused a puddle
on 
the ground yet nor to have even triggered the warning light. The level was

only slightly below the max, surprising that it had such an effect.

Can't get to an Alfa specialist at moment so will talk to local guy
tomorrow 
and see if he can replace it.
