Thanks for the suggestions - tried swapping front for rear (having
checked the tires thoroughly for signs of saw-toothing or any other
issues), but didn't solve the problem.

Took it to an Alfa specialist who immediately diagnosed worn CV joint
bearings. To be fair to my local garage, the owner had suggested that,
but wasn't sure enough for us to go ahead and replace them somewhat
speculatively.
