I guess you don't recall the 1950s and 1960s when many compact cars
were available, but most people still chose to drive full-sized vehicles.
Surely you must remember when George Romney, as head of AMC, waged a very
public war against "gas-guzzling dinosaurs" and "trundling tanks" that
were typical of the day. Yet people still kept buying them by the
millions.

Hybrids are a stop-gap at best. Hundreds of pounds of expensive batteries,
and an insanely complex drivetrain, all to get about the same fuel
efficiency as a 1970s vintage VW Rabbit. (Thanks, but no thanks.) I
suspect those hybrid contraptions will be rotting in junkyards soon enough
when the cost of battery replacement exceeds the car's overall value.

As I said, no thanks. I've been driving the same car for over 25 years
and have no plans to change any time soon. I'm certainly not going to
crap it up with some dicey experimental drivetrain just to save a few
bucks on gas.

Because we have a free market where people make decisions based on
their own needs, desires, and budgets. There is no scam involved,
and there are plenty of non-hybrid fuel-efficient vehicles for
people to buy if they so choose.

Frankly, you sound like you're about 15 years old.
