Unfortunately, this is a common ailment.  This happened on my '01 Sebring 
LXi and my '99 Plymouth Breeze.  It's most likely the ignition cylinder. 
In 
both instances, I was able to tap the key further into the lock by using a

hammer.  Tap, not pound.  This was taught to me by the Chrysler dealer. 
It 
allowed me to drive the car in for a new ignition cylinder as opposed to 
being towed.
