I think it's kind of pointless to worry about how something was made 10
years ago. There are two options here. Change the strap or listen to the
clicking. You HAVE to remove the entire door panel to do this job. It's
not
a hard job if you are handy at all. It just takes a little time. I think
that when you get a look at it removed from the car you will see how it's
really made and will understand it more. The concept was ok, but for some
reason a LOT of them broke.
