By now you know the answer, but for anyone else that might happen upon 
this post...

Replace the CV joint boots quickly! If any dirt gets in the joint it 
will wear out quickly. The axel needs to be removed from the car and the 
joint thoroughly cleaned and repacked with the correct grease.
