Actually, that one little tidbit is true - and note right now I'm
not even going to try searching through 363 lines of drivel to find
any other nuggets of potential truth.

Many modern cars out there that are in normal compression range and
are fully computer controlled CAN run just fine on 87/88-octane
regular - IF the computer can knock the timing back enough to keep it
from detonating or knocking, and IF you drive the car conservatively
so it doesn't have to do it that much.

(The octane varies between areas - the 87 or 88 allows for altitude
and climate.)

They put wiggle words in the Owners Manual on some cars - if you see
something like "We /SUGGEST/ 91/92 Octane Premium or better for best
performance, but you can use 87/88 Octane regular fuel" it means just
that - you can. And if driven conservatively you'll save a little
money overall on your gasoline.

There are some high end car models (Lexus, Infiniti, Lincoln,
Ferrari, Maserati, etc.) that have high compression engines,
turbocharged, supercharged, etc. that absolutely have to have 91/92
Octane fuel or else you can do severe engine damage, and that's what
they say in the manual. Disregard that warning at your own rather
substantial risk.

And the same thing goes for older muscle cars that do not have
computer controlled fuel and ignition - if it has a double-digit
compression ratio and a carburetor and points ignition, you might not
be able to de-tune the engine enough to run safely on regular fuel.
