Thanks for the reply,

The engine (L4) is rebuilt with about 5000 miles on it, I checked all
the push-rods and rockers and they were clear.  Popped off the lifter
galley cover buy haven't pulled any lifters yet.  

This started when I over revved it in a sharp left hand turn, probably
starving the engine of oil.  There's definatly no sludge in there, so
I'm guessing burn up lifters or a clog in the galley... is there an
easy way to clear out the galley.  One that doesn't require pulling
the engine?
