Car-Guy Trivia (answers are later in this issue)
1) What cities were the start and finish of the first intercontinental
auto
race in 1908?
2) One of George Lucas' first films was made for $750,000 and is now
considered the most profitable movie in Hollywood history.
-Lucas could not afford a soundtrack, so he used pre-recorded music
through
the whole film.
-It was the first film to have several story lines running through it at
the
same time.
-At least three of the newcomer actors/actresses went on to stardom on the
small screen.
-And yes, it was full of some great cars.
-What film was it?
3) What bank-robbing duo put 7,500 miles on a stolen gray Ford V8 over 23
days before being ambushed in Louisiana?
4) We had a Henry Ford question a while back about black Model Ts. But why
were Model Ts black?
5) Who once agreed to head up Chrysler for an annual salary of one dollar?
--- Recaps ---
These last three questions are from over a year ago. If you remember them
from before, consider this a memory test.
6) Last month, we told you three sets of father/son F1 drivers. We then
said
there have also been three sets of brothers that competed in F1, two pairs
ran brother against brother. One pair ran in separate years. After we
challenged you like that, we immediately received two responses from you
guys, one was from Terry with exactly the three pairs we had in mind. Then
we received another from Jack N with a new pair entirely. It seems that
Jack
was right, so we had four pairs of brothers that have run in F1. Some
wheel
to wheel, some not. Then he came up with ANOTHER pair. Jack, you're
getting
way ahead of us. Care to see how many you can think of between here and
when
you get to the answers at the bottom of this issue?
7) A- What car did Peter Falk drive in "Columbo"?
B- In "Walking Tall 2", what muscle car does Buford Pusser destroy?
8) In 1957, Chevrolet entered the special Corvette SS developed by Zora
Arkus Duntov in the 12-hour race at Sebring. The car never practiced
before
the race. Why not?

* I Meet The Most Interesting People With This Shop
Robert Straub wandered into our shop. After discussing the merits of CMC
models for a while, it came up that he was a GM stylist in the '60s, and
that he, too, wrote a book. Bob spent a year in France with his camera,
armed and ready at all times. From this came a most interesting book of
European cars of the '50s, all in their natural habitat. With the turn of
every page, you are treated to a black & white photo of one of the great
cars of the time, cars like the Delages, Delahayes, Lago-Talbots, even
Bugattis. And on the facing page, there is a thumbnail description of the
car or cars in each picture and often a few words of the surroundings. To
top it off, Bob penned the line drawings at the beginning of each chapter.
The drawings were later published in Automobile Quarterly. The Larz
Anderson
Transportation Museum in Brookline, Mass is currently devoting an entire
room to Bob's photos and drawings.
We have a few copies of his book here at the shop now.
The museum's Phone # is 617-522-6547.

Bits and Pieces
The American highway system is one of our country's best gifts to Car
Guys.
They have an easy numbering system that is great to know when we are
traveling. You may already know these. If so, it's a refresher course.
-All North-South Interstate highways are odd numbered. (Think of Rt. 95
running from Maine all the way past our shop to Florida.)
-All East-West Interstate highways are even numbered. (Think of Rt. 50
running from D.C. all the way to the shoreline in Ocean City, MD.)
- North-South highways mileage markers. Most states place milepost markers
at one-mile increments from zero at the south end of a state to the
northern
end of the state or the end of the highway. When you pass from one state
to
another, the numbers start all over again. (Driving to Florida every year,
this tells me how many miles we have to go in each new state.)
- East-West highways mileage markers. Most states place milepost markers
at
one-mile increments from zero at the western end of a state to the eastern
end of the state or the end of the highway. When you pass from one state
to
another, the numbers start all over again. Rt. 50 starts at zero leaving
D.C. to its highest in O.C. Sorry, I didn't have time to go see what that
mileage marker is.
-The lowest numbered North-South Interstate highways are on the west
coast;
Rt. 5 runs up and down through California, Oregon and Washington State.
-The highest numbered North-South Interstate highways are on the east
coast.
-The lowest numbered East-West Interstate highways are in the southern end
of the country; Rt. 10 runs through California, over through Texas, all
the
way to Florida.
-The highest numbered East-West Interstate highways are in the northern
end
of the country; Rt. 90 runs from Washington State to Massachusetts.
Then, it gets confusing. (This is the government, you know.)
-State routes follow pretty much the same rules, but the lower numbered
routes are on the east coast, and the higher routes are on the west coast.
That explains why Rt. 1 is at our door here at the shop.
-Many states use milepost numbers to identify exits. This helps when you
are
traveling and want a particular exit; the milepost markers will tell you
how
close you are to that exit.
-But, several states still number their exits consecutively, with the
lower
exit numbers at the southern end, incrementing to the highest at the
northern end of the highway, and on the east-west routes, they increment
low
to high, traveling west to east.
Enough of this, we will mention a couple other hints next issue.

Car-Guy Trivia Answers
1) What cities were the start and finish of the first intercontinental
auto
race in 1908?
It was from New York, New York to Paris, France.
(Thanks to Trivial Pursuit Genus I.)
2) American Graffiti by George Lucas was made on a shoestring. It was also
one of the best films of the '60's American car scene ever. Major
characters, Richard Dreyfus, Ron Howard, McKenzie Phillips, Suzanne
Summers,
and Harrison Ford all went on to bigger and better things. And if you have
never seen it, we have only a few left, it is now out of print.
3) Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow were the bank-robbing duo who put 7,500
miles on a stolen gray Ford V8 over 23 days before being ambushed in
Louisiana. We have Franklin Mint's version now.
4) During the Model Ts' time, paint didn't dry as quickly as now. New cars
were left in warehouses for days, waiting to dry. This took up a lot of
warehouse space, and the longer they sat, the greater chance of dirt or
dust
settling in the new paint. Henry had his people search the globe to find
the
fastest drying paint. The paint they found was the same black lacquer used
on wind-up music boxes. Less time spent drying, less chance of flaws, less
warehouse rental, higher profit.
(Thanks to our friend, Roger B for this one.)
5) Lee Iacocca once agreed to head up Chrysler for an annual salary of one
dollar. Although he was there for the inception of K cars, he did bring
out
the mini-van, and he brought in Carroll Shelby, the creator of the Viper.
--- Recaps ---
6) The five pairs of brothers that competed in F1? The three we started
with
were:
1. Wilson and Emerson Fittipaldi ran wheel to wheel
2. Michael and Ralf Schumacher are still at it
3. Pedro Rodriguez started F1 in 1963, the year after his brother Ricardo
was killed on November 11, 1962.
Then, Jack came up with Jody and Ian Scheckter. (Also wheel to wheel at
times.)
Now Jack says the Fabi brothers shared a Brabham in '84, Corrado driving
when Teo was busy with CART.
(Thanks to our friends Jeff M and Jack N.)
7) A- What car did Peter Falk drive in "Colombo"? A Peugeot 403
B- In "Walking Tall 2", what muscle car does Buford Pusser destroy? A 1970
Camaro with white racing stripes.
8) The Corvette SS never practiced before the race because the stylists
who
had designed and built the body were afraid that it would be scratched.
(From 'Corvette From The Inside' by Dave McLellan, Corvette chief
engineer.
Thanks to our friend Jeff M.)
