The rather powerful V-8 in your Q45 needs so-called premium gasoline - 91
octane. Using a lower octane gas, such as 89 octane, risks damage to the
engine. That said, the engine computer in your car is likely able to
handle
the extra engine knock when using less than 91 octane. It will do this by
cutting back on the power capability of the engine, and thus, waste gas.
However, I wouldn't, and don't, use less than 91 octane gas with the
Infiniti 4.5 liter V-8. I have a somewhat newer M45, which uses the same
engine. It says right on my gas cap and filler door - use 91 octane only.
And I do.
And quite frankly, you should have thought of that before buying such a
car.
My wife, a lady with different taste in cars than I, bought a Toyota
Prius,
which uses the lowest octane gas you can get, and gets over 40
miles-per-gallon (MPG) in the process. I am satisfied with 15-16 MPG and
only using premium. When I bought my first car, it was a used '52 Chevy.
It
got about the same mileage as my M45. Regular gas back then costs about
$0.25 per gallon. On Sunday I filled my M45 tank with premium gas that
costs
$2.36 a gallon. However, I make 20 times the money I made back when gas
was
$0.25 a gallon. So, from my point of view, my M45 cost almost one-half of
what my old Chevy cost to fill up.
Bye.
PS. The truth is most men don't know any more about cars than you do. They
just pretend they do. However, I used to build cars for drag racing and
until my body gave out, I did all of my own work on all the cars in our
family.
