67 Cougar

Will be a wonderful car with a little love but I have some questions:
A little history - have had the car about a year and a half and have
focused on body salvation and mechanical. Now that she is consistently
drivable:

Headlights open but do not close. I have found what I think is a
vacuum switch on the drivers side inner fender - is this mechanism to
open and close? Where is the best place to start looking for the close
problem? All of the vacuum lines I can find are in good shape but we
are going to replace them all.

Brake light switch went out. Bought the piece from either O'Reillys or
Advance - been awhile and do not specifically remember. Driving at
night a tap on the old brakes leaves one with a dark dashboard. Nobody
remembers this little event before the new switch.

The running lights on the front also come on when the brakes are
tapped (this was a constant - not a new issue like the dash lights). I
figure this is due in part to the "butchering" that was done when the
original sequential tail lights were taken out. Any ideas?

Cowl: Have found the air vent on the passenger's side - just an ugly
old box. On the driver's side there is some sort of plastic cover that
looks like an electric fan cover but I have yet to figure out how to
open the vent on this side - is the fan cover thing factory? Where are
the drains for the cowl - am sure I need to go through those and get
them cleaned out.

 Any insight is appreciated.

 Thanks
