Right you are, Steve.  But I'm not sure what car you could be talking 
about that was produced from 1959 - 2000 without any design changes.  At 
first I thought you might be talking about the original Mini, but I 
checked it out, and believe it or not, there have been several 
engineering and design changes made to it over the years.  The first 
major one was... hmm.. let me see... oh yes, only TWO years after it's 
inception date of 1959.  That was in 1961, when the legendary John 
Cooper turned the underpowered little "orange box" into a decent little 
performance car.

Of course, many, many other changes were made to the Mini over the 
years, and thankfully so for the devoted fans of this car.  Concerns 
over passenger safety and environmental issues were addressed, 
performance was tweaked, and the little car continued to improve.

So if I may paraphrase you, Steve, a good design is one that changes to 
keep in step with the times, not one that is stagnating in the past.
