I did sometimes have trouble changing down to second if the engine revs
were still high, but that was before I got my gearbox rebuilt.

But to be honest it didn't bother me too much and I only got the
gearbox in my 1990 Mini Cooper sorted after it was damaged by a so
called Insurance Recommended Body Repair Specialist a few years ago.
But that's another long story.

Anyway you could try using a better quality oil like say "Duckhams Q
Classic 20W/50" as that's been highly recommended by many Mini owners
for all Mini's regardless of their age, because of course the car
shares the engine oil with the gearbox and using thin Rover recommended
10W/40 stuff just isn't good enough and the synchro's hate it too.

So give it a whirl Fitzy unless you already use it?
