Thanks to all who answered on this.
I've always had the thumbwheel turned all the way to full on. During
the day, when the headlights are on* can't see time at all, but
at night, can see. Go figure.
* We are having our seasonal "May Gray, June Gloom", in this
coastal So. Calif. town.
