I have a 1995 Nissan Presea 1800 (in NZ). I believe this car is not
sold in the US, but I think the engine, SR18(DE) is used in some models
that are in the US, perhaps the Sentra. In any case my questions
probably have very general answers.
There is sometimes a loud squealing noise that persists for a while
after starting, presumably coming from the alternator/aircon/PS belt. I
hope the belt doesn't need replacing, because the access to it is
incredibly limited. I'm pretty sure this is not a job I want to attempt
myself. I can probably adjust the best tension myself, but not having a
manual I'm not certain how to proceed.
It looks as if I should loosen the top mounting bolt on the alternator,
then use the tensioning bolt to pivot the alternator. My first question
is do I need to loosen the bottom mounting bolt as well? This will be
hard to get at. The second question is, assuming I can pivot the
alternator, how do I determine when the belt tension is correct?
Thanks in advance for any responses.
