I would second the notion that it may very well be your fuel pump.

Mid-80's GM fuel pumps rarely failed to where they wouldn't make noise
when 
you turn the key.  But they have some internal parts that begin to fail. 
When that happens, the fuel pump does not leak fuel, and the only symptom
is 
that your car seems to run ... well, the way yours is running.

Sadly, the only way you can know for sure is to replace it.
