The foam between the backer board and fabric degrades over time. Any
auto upholstery shop should have or can get new material for you. Or
there are online places. You'll also need some 3M 08088 headliner
adhesive (some have problems with adhesive made by others).

I've seen two methods, one leaving the backerboard installed, and the
other removing it. I used the second when I did mine. The most
im****tant part is get all the old foam off the backerboard, old glue
can remain. There's a brief rundown of the second method here:
