On a 3.8 you have almost certainly taken out the front clutch shell -
not sure exactly what it's called, but the clutch plates are supposed
to be held by it. Your plates have likely torn through it - it is a
weak point of the tranny on that setup.

My Trans S****t did the same at about 300,000 km. Made a real mess.
