Today the news services are carrying the story of GM and Chrysler
talking merger. Thinking how the product lines over-lap with Dodge,
Do you think there is a case where GM would pull the plug on Pontiac
in favor of Dodge becoming the new entry point for GM family? Here is
how the product mix plays out over the first two years GM/Chrysler
merger:
Saturn has the Sky, so the Soltice buyers go there. The G8 and G6
folds into the new GM/Dodge line-up. The G-5 dead-ends and the Turent
goes under the Dodge line. However, GM has all the Jeep products so
this maybe too much of an overlap of sales.
GMC folds into the Dodge pick-up line with Dodge RAM going up scale
and GMC going down, a meeting in the middle for ride/quality/options.
Chevy has their line of pick-up trucks so GM would not want to take
sales away from the low-price leader. GMC heavy trucks and Dodge
heavy trucks merge into together in the GMC brand to set them off as a
commerical truck line.
Ad for the Chrysler brand, some may move into Buick to fill gaps in
the product line.
Jeep stays as Jeep but Hummer goes where old war horses get sent to
die(sold off.)
Viper, gets bottled as oil and sold to the highest bidder.
Min-van moves to Chevy or GM just walk-away from the business.
And for us Pontiac folks waiting for a new Firebird? We buy up as
many NOS parts as we can and join the Old's rocket folks standing next
to the DeSoto gang in the back field at Hersey. Walter P. will be
there to greet us!
