The first part is spot on, but the last part could use some major
clarification.
There are issues with all cars including ****sches, but there are many
older 911s that are great daily drivers.
Any 1960's 911 is an old car and should be gone through to make sure
it's a viable driver. One should probably only be a daily driver in the
possession of the most handy of individuals. The early 70's cars seem
okay, but they too are old cars now. The mid 70's saw major issues with
head/case studs on the very hot 2.7l motor. The engine must be rebuilt
to fix this problem. In 1976 ****sche began dipping the bodies in zinc
to prevent rust. Pre-76, look for major rust. Post-76, look for minor
rust.
The 78-83 SC is a great car with the 83 being the best of that lot.
The rubber-centered clutches should have all exploded and been replaced
by now. There should be a chain-tensioner and pop-off valve on the car.
If not, do it now. The 80's 911 is fine with only some premature
valve guide wear, but they really got good in 87 and up with an improved
transmission.
The 1990 model is suspect for several reasons (head warping, flywheel
problem, distributer vent) and values tend to reflect this. If the
fixes were done (and do***ented), they can be great values. The 1991
has less problems (head and flywheel problem were fixed), but it tends
to get lumped in with the 90 which means that great deals can be had
there, as well. The 993 had problems with alignment in the first (US)
year and the 996 had some growing pains in it's first few years, but
overall they are good cars with the latter years being the better cars.
If you don't mind the looks, you can find some good bargains with the
pre-2000 models, too. Just be cautious as those were the years that had
more issues. Someone here must know more than me about the 996, though.
All this stuff is out there on the net. Pelican Parts and Rennlist are
great resources. PCA has a tech area for questions/answers also. As
Guru has stated, an inspection of the car is mandatory.
Post more questions if you have them and best of luck!
