I'm with Robert there, and will add this: first you should decide
which generation 911 you want, then shoot for the latest example. As
resale values are showing, not everyone that can afford a 996 wants
one - they're spending the money on 993s. Others prefer the hairy ride
of a short wheelbase early car, or the rawness of the 70s cars, while
still others picture the 80s Carrera when they think 911. Once you've
selected which generation you want, sure, the latest version is likely
where you want to go.
Personally, my dream 911 is a '67 911S. I tend to like early
production examples of most things - cars, books, music. You tend to
get more of what the artists/designers intends, and less of what the
marketers thought everyone wanted. That desire tends to go against
what every buyer's guide will tell you. :)
