Exhaust misery

by magnate <chrisc@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Jun 21, 2007 at 01:15 AM

Hi All,

My 1985 Carrera Targa has just failed its MoT - exhaust gases escaping
from a leak in the manifold. Not sure why that's a failure but that's
what they tell me.

Anyway, the problem is that in order to remove and repair/replace the
manifold, they need to remove the exhaust assembly. This is the
original 1985 one, and is so rusted and corroded that it will fall
apart and be impossible to reassemble.

So they're quoting me about =A32100 for a new Porsche exhaust, and about
=A31300 for a third-party one (Panton? Patton? Peyton?). Plus labour, of
course.

Does that sound about right for a new exhaust? I don't mind buying one
- I've seen the current situation and agree that it definitely needs
replacing - I'm just concerned not to pay more than I need to. The car
is otherwise in good condition (only ~87,000mi, mid-90s engine
rebuild) so I think it'll be worthwhile.

Would you recommend the Porsche one or the other one? What do you get
for the extra money?

Many thanks,

Chris
