All,
My 1985 Carrera Targa has just failed its MoT - exhaust gases escaping
from a leak in the manifold. Not sure why that's a failure but that's
what they tell me.
Anyway, the problem is that in order to remove and repair/replace the
manifold, they need to remove the exhaust assembly. This is the
original 1985 one, and is so rusted and corroded that it will fall
apart and be impossible to reassemble.
So they're quoting me about £2100 for a new ****sche exhaust, and about
£1300 for a third-party one (Panton? Patton? Peyton?). Plus labour, of
course.
Does that sound about right for a new exhaust? I don't mind buying one
- I've seen the current situation and agree that it definitely needs
replacing - I'm just concerned not to pay more than I need to. The car
is otherwise in good condition (only ~87,000mi, mid-90s engine
rebuild) so I think it'll be worthwhile.
Would you recommend the ****sche one or the other one? What do you get
for the extra money?
Many thanks,
Chris
I'd go for an aftermarket exhaust, but don't get one that's too loud.
Part
of the beauty of a 911 is the wonderful engine noises it makes. I got an
aftermarket exhaust and it just adds a throaty rumble to the idle. Once
you
get going you can hear the ending fine, and it doesn't wake up the
neighborhood. My neighbor got a s****t exhaust on his 911 and it sounds
like
a s****tbike on steroids. Personally, I think it's too loud, but he loves
it.
