I agree with several of William's points. The 944 isn't to be
overlooked. The way everyone raves about how the Boxster/Cayman is a
superior driver to the 911, held back by ****sche, is history
repeating; the 944 was the critic's choice back in the 80s, especially
the turbo and S2, which are considerably cheaper to buy and no more
expensive to own.
Also, the 912 is a good choice if you can find one. It's seriously
undervalued and very similar to the VWs you're used to; some people
even swap in tuned VW engines. The 912 also handles better than the
911 due to better weight distribution, as the engine sits farther
forward.
And yeah, the '84 should be close in price have a couple fewer
headaches, if you insist on going the 911 route. But you can
definitely keep one running without a lot of specialist knowledge and
tools. The Bentley manuals and Wayne Dempsey's "101 Projects for your
911" will get you through most things.
