At a minimum, the entire system should be flushed of old oil, and the
receiver/dryer should be replaced.  Otherwise you run the risk of serious
contamination problems which could eventually lead to more expensive
problems.

Stay with R12 if at all possible.  And yes, it is still available.
Even in the PRK (Peoples Republik of Kalifornia.)
