There comes a time...

by "googleposter" <googleposter@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Apr 26, 2005 at 09:59 PM

....in a mans life when he desires the finer things in life. That time
will (hopefully) be coming to me in the next couple of years. I am very
fortunate to be working in a high demand industry where the
renumeration can be more than one would expect for essentially doing
what you love to do. Twice I have got the taste of individual success
and each time used that as fuel for the next venture.
The third time (present) has been the hardest work and regardless of
the outcome will be the last venture of this type. I am confident with
this attempt but if I could predict the future I would not be working
as hard as I current do.

I am English who has lived and worked in America for the last 10 years.
I have always been a car guy - I do not believe cars should be an
adornment or a trinket but should be owned for one or more of the
following reasons
- Practicability. If you need to carry soldiers and gear into combat
buy a hummer. A hummer should NOT be seen in the local supermarkets
carpark.
- Appreciation and admiration. An enthusiast will buy a E-type a
'trinket' seeker will buy a new jag
- Personal Satisfaction. This may appear as counter to the other
reasons - but I did say one or more was good enough. Reusing the
hummer reference - do those drivers get personal satisfaction from
driving it - or is any satisfaction they get at the expense of others?

I have driven a E-type extensively and was lucky enough to spend a
unforgettable trip to Le Mans in a factory built Marcos. Neither of
these cars I owned. I have been extremely frugal and practical with my
personal cars - I currently drive a little Golf TDI.

Finally to my point and my questions.....

I assume that the people who read this are not 'trinket' seekers and
appreciate cars and are qualfied to hopefully answer a very serious
question I have.

I plan to purchase two cars when/if this venture reaches a satisfactory
conclusion.

The first will be A Mercedes - probably a diesel. I would be just as
happy with a older well maintained one as I would be in a new one.

The second car will appeal to my personal satisfaction.

I am considering a Bentley Continental GT or a Aston DB9. These are
the only cars (currently) on the list.

If I were to purchase either of these cars would I be seen as a trinket
owner by current bentley/aston owners?
I want to be able tour and I get the feeling the Bentley may be more
reliable than the Aston. Is this correct?

There are other questions but this post is long enough already.
