Control freaks try this all the time...start a clunky HTTP-based
"group" and no one follows, because they, in a word, suck when
compared to the ease and usefulness of Usenet. AOHell tried something
similar in chat rooms with "bolt holders" (self-appoint control
freaks) and the result was a 50% decrease in traffic...exactly the
opposite of what they'd hoped. The financial woes of AOHell now are
there for all to see what happens when ham fisted cor****ate
mismanagement screws up a business model.
