   As Randy mentioned, it could be even later than that, as the D3's
were used for several years. Since you are going to change the valve
cover gaskets to check for sludge buildup and parts integrity, you
could find the date code to narrow things down.

   Tough question, as the early combos are a tad too high for pump gas
today. Any carbon buildup would aggravate that situation. For all
around use, the D3's are probably better. I have those on my truck and
there is no lack of power. How does it run now?

   The current advice you are getting in the 460 Forum is right on the
money. However, there is the matter of original mileage on this engine.
People today forget that old engines were pretty well used up at 100k
miles. Stickin' go-fast parts on a tired engine will just hasten its
demise, especially if you have your foot in the gas more often..
Compression and leak-down tests will tell you something about the valve
condition and ring seal, respectively. The valve *seals* at least would
have to be changed, because you can bet they are frigged by now.

   Changing the cam/lifters will also involve new valve springs and
hardware, and possibly rocker arms and pushrods.  Do you want to go
through all this on a marginal engine?

   Qualify what you are working with from the start. My serious
suggestion is to buy a book on the 460 so you can see what you are
messing with. Until you have answers, I suggest bolt-ons that can
transfer to the next engine/rebuild. Intake, carb, ignition components,
and headers. Take some engine compartment measurements and start here
for possibilities:

   The gray area here is the timing chain. The stock one is junk, and
should be changed to one that you can advance 4º. This *will* net you
some horses even with a smogger cam. Lots of work, though, if you are
not mechanically inclined.
