If the water pump inlet is on the right side (looking forward) the timing
tab is obscured by it. There is a sheet metal tab spot welded to the
timing
chain cover with the timing increments stamped in it, the harmonic
balancer
has a single slash mark.
Prior to '72 the WP inlet was on the left and the timing tab was out in
the
open but when they changed the inlet to the right side in '72 they left
the
big block timing tab in its original location and it's hard to see. The
small block tab was relocated to the left; go figure.
A mirror might help locate it.
