Re: electric problems in 71 challenger. pos-neg connection made

That's a fusible link that burned up (as it's supposed to...  think fuse or

circuit breaker).  You will need to replace it.  It should be flagged for 
ease of locating it... It runs from the round terminal on the starter 
relay - the small box - and connects to the wiring harness with a push-on 
connector.
