I just junked one of them new (chinese made) starters too. seem mine
does not fit the 440 block properly
and is held on a cocked angle. It sets teeth to deep and it binds??
seems you would have to grind the block in a couple places. (other
freinds have had the same problem????)
What it did?? It broke the ring gear off the torque converter (small
light weight ring gear) first day. made some awfull noises.
Like you I was looking at it not engaging when I could move the gear
in and out so it had a broken weld and was bent so it no longer made
contact. Out with the trans.
Then next day out It took a tooth off the replacement (meaty) starter
ring gear on the Torque converter. On checking I can see where block
will need to be ground down for proper alignment but it also bust the
nose off the new starter. so two days out to the drags 1 run fist time
and out with trans. 4 runs next time and out with trans. I put my 17
year old mopar performance one back in and it's fine now.
So check that alignment and look for bust and or chiped teeth on your
starter gear.
Seems most of these new age starters must have the block ground down
under the frost plugs and on the castiong 1" back of where starter
goes onto trans.
