My '71 Challenger came (used) with a set of 14" Mercury Cougar mag
wheels on it (the ones modeled after the Cragar SS, but in steel with
conical lugs). I replaced two of them that I thought were damaged
with Appliance Steel Spoke wheels of the same size (closest
aftermarket appearance at the time); I did not want (and still don't)
the Cragar wheels with the 'unilug' or whatever they called it, using
washers with offset holes. Turned out the Cougar mags were actually
OK but I ran with the mismatched wheels for many years. It was my
daily driver, not a collector.
I really don't want the Cougar mags on the car any more but I really
like the way this style of wheel looks on my car. Appliance is
apparently long dead, and I've had no luck locating another pair of
Steel Spokes in the appropriate size/offset/lug pattern. I also can't
locate any info about what Appliance did produce in the day WRT
sizes.
At some point I want to upgrade to 15" wheels (or 16" at absolute
outside) in order to clear a future brake upgrade; I'm looking for a
pair of 14" wheels as a completer set till then, but 15s (or 16s) will
be mandatory later on.
Does anyone know if Appliance Steel Spokes were ever made in 15" sizes
with Mopar lug spacing? Any listing of such with offsets available
anywhere? I can't even find a catalog online, just some places
selling old magazine clippings of their ads.
Are there any other current or recent vendors of SS lookalikes that
use normal lug nuts and are available for Mopar in 15" or 16"?
I took a look at Cragar and it appears they do have conical lug SS
style wheels but they still don't fit the bill; the 14-15" rims are
still the 'classic' unilug, and they skip over 16" and go right to 17"
with their newer offerings. Unfortunately that leaves them out of the
running; 17" is too big for the look I want to keep.
Thanks for any information.
