Sounds like Jim is giving it right from a Ford service manual.
An identical procedure is listed in many Chrysler service manuals 
that cover rear axles of similar design, i.e., the 8.75.

The OP didn't mess with the pinion depth.

Agreed.  The OP has hastened the demise of his ring and pinion.
