Re: Possible to tighten spider gears on Ford 8-inch?

by "Jim Warman" <mechanic@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Mar 16, 2004 at 08:11 AM

Well of course adjusting the pinion depth is the first step in setting up a
differential...... but I don't see where Doc said anything about altering
the pinion depth. As I see it, we were talking about adjusting ring gear
position/side bearing preload. I have every Ford service manual from 1992
to
2005 on my laptop and, quite unfortunately, they mustn't be "any" service
manual since they do not discuss the banjo style differential. It matters
not since the ring gear adjustment procedure was simple enough to commit
to
memory >30 years ago. Ford last used the banjo diff in the 1985ish half
tons
and, if you can avail yourself of a manual for one of these and you will
see
how simple they are to make adjustments.

On integral type diffs, ring gear position/side bearing preload is
adjusted
using selective spacers (the big washers betwixt housing and bearing). All
too often, we see the ring gear being inadvertently moved by the unwary
mixing up the left and right selective washers. In still other diffs, ring
gears can be moved by changing the ****ms between the side bearings and the
differential cage. I have yet to come across a hypoid gearset than doesn't
have some provision for adjusting ring gear position.

FWIW, it is a good thing that you mentioned pinion depth.... As Niel
points
out, quiet differential operation (and long life) depends on proper
juxtaposition between ring and pinion. We can have correct backlash and
horrible pattern at the same time - the only solution is either correct
set-up or a real loud stereo. If we run a gearset that isn't properly set
up, we run the risk of re-establi****ng wear patterns and losing the
op****tunity for finding the 'quiet spot'. Setting up a diff is, for the
experienced, relatively easy - but if we make an error and don't correct
it
right away, we can open Pandoras box.

The question isn't "can" we adjust ring gear position..... it becomes a
matter of "should" we. As for were I learned stuff.... let's just say that
the Fairlane Thunderbolt was still a hot ticket when I got into this
business and Carrol Shelby still hadn't discovered the Mustang.
