The center of the contact down inside is just a rivet.  It can get rusty 
with age and it can get covered with ash with age.  The little bits of 
ash left after lighting a smoke build up over the years.

A good clean is called for on lots of them.  Be sure the power is off, 
they short out easy.  I use a mini flat head screwdriver to scrape the 
rivet clean.
