Maybe it is just really full. The gas pump will shut off when the tank
is almost full. Normally you can still get a gallon or two in a little
at a time after that.
When I am not sure about the gas gauge, I just get a gas can and fill
that up and carry it in the back, then drive and watch the gauge. If it
finally starts to move, OK, then the above is right. Our 'new' car will
go for over 100 miles before the gas gauge starts to move down.
There is a vent on the gas tank filler that 'could' get maybe pinched or
blocked, although that is pretty unusual. If this happened, it would be
very hard to put gas in. If you look under the filler, there is a small
tube and a large one. The small one is the vent.
Then sometimes you just have to turn the gas pump filler nozzle in a
different direction to make it work well. The gas pump nozzle has a
little hole at the end on it's bottom. When this hole is blocked by gas
or even the side of the filler tube, the pump handle clicks and shuts off.
