Just a WAG, but look inside and see if one of the "fingers" near the
bottom
has folded over and shorted to the center button.  I've seen this once or
twice - the bimetal fingers form a detent to hold the lighter in until it
gets hot enough to pull back and release the lighter.  They are fairly
brittle, so if the end of the plug gets hold of them just right they will
either break or fold over.  Cheap replacement lighter?
