Found the solution.

There's a lever that you can replace, but the manufacturer's official
solution is to replace the entire vent assembly, $200 for the vent
assembly, plus god know what for labor, since the whole dash has to come
out.
You can get the lever online for $20-30, and the part can be replaced
without dash removal. Woohoo!
