I would just spray it like it is and as mentioned, if that helps a 
lubricant 'might' be in order, but...

If it got dusted or mudded up and you see grit coming out with the WD40, 
I would want to leave it dry inside after the WD40 eva****ates.  I think 
any kind of lube will only collect the dust you managed to spray out 
making it worse and harder next time.

I think a bone dry lock cylinder works best on a Jeep.
