The 4.0 is notorious for the sensors getting bad connections. They are
low powered computer signal pins that corrode while still looking great.
I recommend a spray contact cleaner like sold at electronic shops for
cleaning them and some dielectric grease for the plug's seal skirts to
help keep them clean. WD40 will work in a pinch, but is not the best.
The im****tant ones are the CPS which is located on the driver's side top
bellhousing edge so you have to follow the wire to find the connection,
either up on the firewall or on top of the manifold. This one is so bad
for a shaky connection, soldering the wires together is even one
recommended fix. It also can cause your slow starts. When I cleaned
mine it made a big difference there although Cherokees are 'slow'
starters coompared to lots of others.
Then the TPS on the throttle body also gets corroded connections that
can cause the slow warm up issue. Both it and the IAC or idle control
on the throttle body connections should be cleaned.
