As other posters have pointed out - it is achieved by manipulation the
valves.
What I would like to see is the computer/hydraulic actuated valve system
perfected and put into production on the average car - doing away with
all controls except matched fuel injection. Simply controlling the
valve timing and travel to meter air in much the same way as fuel
injectors meter fuel, seems, to me, to be the ultimate efficiency design.
I understand that the system might already be used in some large diesel
engines.
