Such ideas have been around for decades, and Cadillac had a V8 engine that
could progressively shut down from 8 to 6 to 4 cylinders on the fly as
demand dictated. It wasn't overly successful as it never worked as well as
a
boosted small engine would or does, and most people who buy cars with
large
engines couldn't give too much of a **** about fuel economy anyway.
It's a far easier and simpler solution to use a smaller capacity engine
with
forced induction bringing the boost (and ultimately power) on as required
rather than having a large engine and then trying to shut it down in
stages
to make it more economical.
