It's a *ute*, as in "utilitiy" vehicle. You prattle on about being
misleading and don't find the term "pickup" to be the slightest bit
misleading at all?

A "lift" would be the box you get into that moves between floors so you
don't have to take the stairs.
An "elevator" is an American equivalent.
