A servo I went to tried that too. I refused to buy from them. There is no 
way I am leaving my credit card with the servo attendant (out of my sight)

while I fill up.

Anyone who agrees to this is a moron (IMHO) and deserves to have
fraudulent 
charges appear on their card. It wouldn't surprise me if the bank refused
to 
protect you in a situation like this, as they make it quite clear that you

should NEVER let your card leave your sight when making a purchase.
