Mate, I do upwards of 50Mm (hi Bernd) a year, and have gotten insane
life out of lpg engines (well insane by petrol stanards anyway) I've
never used lpg specific oil, just decent quality oil, of the right
viscosity/index, and change it every 5000km

On the convertor thing, I'm not saying it's smooth sailing - but every
30,000Km? (30Mm) I've seen convertors with problems after around 5-10
times that, never by 30,000 though.

I'm in melbourne, do the odd trip interstate, but mostly get lpg from
just north of melbourne outer suburbs.

One might actually argue that given the lack of carbon contamination,
and avoidance possible petrol washout of bore wall micro lubricant
layers (which is incidentally why efi petrol engines tended to last
longer than their carbed equivalents - less bore wall/ring
deterioration) - will since they are minimised on lpg, you'd possibly
get away with a lesser lubricant.

If there were two oils from the same company, identical weight/grade/vis
and one was labelled for lpg and dearer, I'd go the cheaper one, and
even then wonder if I was actually choosing between two different
containers, not two different oils.

 it also can leave a

How does that (specifically regarding valve guides) need differ in any
way for lpg or petrol?

 the HPR oil has
> some special additives to look after both these critical points

such as? One of the things arguably an issue with modern oils is that
across the board they've been (due mostly to emissions, and I think the
possility they can over time reduce catalytic convertor
efficiency/effectiveness) dropping the zinc dithiophosphate content.
It's primary function, (and you don't need heaps for this effect, but
more than a lot of modern oils have) is that once oil/lubricant has
stopped flowing through an area where there would be metal to metal
contact - for example, during a hard corner, the oil pump pickup is
uncovered and there is a momentary loss of oil pressure, and more day to
day relevant, those first few moments of starting (to quote the old
advert with the teutonic accent) are critical for engine wear. Well in
those oil starved conditions, the zinc will help protect the parts for a
little longer. Obviously running low on oil will **** any engine soon
enough, but the zinc can be the difference between losing an engine, and
getting it through an endurance race in one piece. For the road user,
there's some (not by any means huge, but worthy of consideration) during
starting - any slight reduction in wear every time it starts up is going
to add up quickly enough. To that end, there are a couple of sources of
zinc additives, most of them are rip-offs (they might actually contain
some zinc, but stuff all, or they might have none. In either event, they
often have say double the amt per litre as regular oil, and the rest of
the additive 'is' just plain motor oil. The trick (if anyone cared)
would be to look up a source for the zinc ready to add, but with only in
a smallish container token amount of oil
to make up the rest. If you do a web search, there are places to obtain
it.

The other place is from memory a particular oil brand/class - Rotella.
Some hemi guys (not that you or anyone else here happens to have a hemi
powered valiant) speak very positively of it, and that happens to be an
engine that really does a number on oil additives and vi improvers and
has them breaking down earlier from oil shear - mostly in the oil pump
itself imho (more specifically, it's known they can cause significan oil
deterioration when used for extended high rpm/load conditions, but which
component(s) are leading to that breakdown are believed but not 100%
proven to be the oil pump). It'd further pay to check because the
rotella is a mongrade oil if I remember correctly.

,HPR is
> only a few bucks more than normal oil so why not use it ? I have for a
> combined 2 Mil Klms with very good results .

You might get the same 2 million out of a car that happens to have a
fresh 'tree' car deodoriser put in the car each month, but it doesn't
mean it's contributed to the longevity of the engine. Are you suggesting
that prior to this your lpg engines didn't last and it's only since the
new oil was used from teh getgo that they became more reliable? There's
nothing wrong with the idea of preventative maintenance, and it's
financially sound to outlay a small amount extra for a long term
reduction in costs, but the question is, has this extra outlay actually
achieved this?

This next one bears no relation****p to anything you are doing (afaik)
but ironically there's another such example (though far more costly) of
questionable benefits tied in with lpg cars. Those upper cylinder
lubricants. Despite their claims, they don't prevent carbon/crud buildup
in the intake ****ts and combustion chambers, in fact they often lead to
it (big time). A lot of people say 'well I run it on my lpg car and have
gotten XXXXX km out of it, it must work. Well I've gotten massive
longevity out of engines I run, and they have been predominantly lpg
(and straight lpg) since the early 90s, and I've never used a special
lpg oil (actually there was one or two occasions, but I got it free, so
the price wasn't relative) and never run the upper cylinder replacement
lube. Some manufacturers have noticed a huge gain with those two
products - that is to say a huge gain in profit.
