They commonly fail but I've never heard or a failure causing a fire.

I might be able to help with a schematic, I've got access to a few manuals
but VQ is getting on a bit so the condition may be an issue but they're
not
difficult to work out with a testlight anyway.
The manuals don't cover repairing switches as they are deemed a
non-serviceable item. Ofcourse, people like you and me deem that to be
nonsense, and I've repaired many switches, LCD's, guages and instruments
and
other devices in preference of just replacing them. Having said that, some
part are so cheap that replacing them is more cost effective.
