Spen King's original RR design in the 60s was basically a reworked &
rebodied Landy with a V8 instead of a 4, 3 doors instead of 5, an alarming
appetite for petrol and a more luxurious but still reasonably useful
interior. It also s****ted more familiar BMC bits in the cabin and under
the bonnet than you oculd poke a stick at. Over the next decades, the
luxury, power, thirst and priced increased apace, but right up to the
takeover they still had heaps of familiar old BMC bits under the bonnet.
The Disco was an serious attempt to build a mid price model that sat
between the RR and the Defender.
Today's Defender still shares a hell of a lot witht he original design,
including two bloody great big axles, where both the others have now got
independent air suspensions I think.
As JD said, where the original Disco was largely sourced from the RR, the
RR S****t has now returned the compliment - very *****uous.
As for the Freeloader, I suspect it was designed by some spiteful person
who wanted to prematurely age service managers, dealer CSOs and auto
electricians the world over, while at the same time doubling the profit of
the spares department and making the Austin 1800, Morris Marina & Leyland
P76 look totally reliable! :-)
Cheers
