I've done it quite a few times and the match is still alight when it 
hits the diesel, as soon as it contacts the diesel it goes out straight 
away.

I've got a can of my sons Zippo "Premium Lighter Fluid" on my desk and 
the contents don't smell anything like diesel, it has a slightly oily 
feel to it so the base might be diesel but by the smell it seems to have 
something added to it most likely to make it ignite easily.
According to the label the can contains "Synthetic Isoparaffinic 
Hydrocarbon".
Diesel will NOT ignite if you throw a match into an open container, 
maybe it will ignite if the container is closed enough to allow a build 
up of fumes but I've not tried that.
