The law was changed around 1990/91.  Prior to that concealable
firearms licences used to be accompanied with the instructions for
taking a licensed pistol onto a commercial aircraft.  It involved
notifying the pilot, who then had the option of allowing the holder to
carry it in the cabin (suitably concealed of course) or taking it into
his own care.  IIRC there was nothing to prevent it from being carried
loaded.

For some odd reason, aircraft hijackings were rare in those days!  :)
