I know what you mean. It's because games back in those days had to get
one thing right - game play. It could have graphics with only 4
colours and pixels the size of house bricks, but if it turned out to
be enjoyable to play and RE-playable, then it was a winner.

I remember spending half a day at a mate's place playing a top fuel
drag racing game. 2 colours - green and black. Pixels as I described
earlier. But because it was all down to reaction time for the launch,
how many revs you had when you did launch (not too much, not too
little), it was extremely re-playable. Throttle was simply on or off
so getting the revs right where you wanted them at the time of launch
was a real challenge.

Not to say games of today don't necessarily have that, but there sure
are a lot of **** ones out there that just try to impress with their
graphics or gore factor or sound.

IMHO, the more basic the game, the more it lends itself to your own
imagination, and as long as you've got a decent imagination, that's a
big winner.
